Universe Looking After "Me" while I Can't

It's been an interesting few months for me, now working full-time and unable to work at my practice or at Gallery 111 as much as I would like.  But somehow, things have a way of happening that still let you know your efforts don't go unnoticed.  I just received notice last week that I have been nominated by Sarah Uffelmann for the Contributions to the Community Arts Award for the City of Barrie.  And while I was way up in Midland hosting the opening of a wonderful new show of Ila Kellerman's work at Quest Art, somehow, my work was featured on CTV as part of the Maclaren's Annual Art Auction; an event I was sad to miss.  Check out the video to see my work featured first on the clip, and then watch to listen to Siobhan Byrne, an emerging photographer we are trying to get to show at Gallery 111.  Barrie art auction 'Off the Hook' | CTV Barrie News

Crafted Realities will be Unreal!

December 5th Gallery 111 will be hosting the work of Jesse Bromm along with some new mixed media textiles by myself.  I first saw Jesse's work at the Artist Project 2 years ago and again this summer at the Toronto Outdoor Show.  There is something extremely playful about his work, and yet layers of meaning come to the work when you spend time investigating his juxtaposition of materials.  What I didn't realize originally is that Jesse actually hand blows his own glass containers for his work.  It is this level of craftsmanship that I would like to bring to my own practice. I am really excited to see how his miniature vignettes will look beside my enlarged photos of embroidery hoops.

My Husband, the Hero Strikes Again

Well, my latest stage of my Tangled Realities is now hung at the Bartlett Gallery in Alton Mill, located in Alton, Ontario, just south of Orangeville.  Showing once again with the magnificent Magdolene Dykstra, I can't wait to see the install, as I had no hand in how things will be arranged in the space.  As usual, Lynda and Teresa had to deal with last minute hanging issues and are still begging me for photos, which I didn't have time to shoot as I was literally stitching til 4:00 am the morning before my loving husband kindly delivered the work Thursday morning after helping to organize a van and framing my work!  Good grief, what would I do without him. Please join all of us on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 til 4:00 pm to take in the new work and enjoy some refreshments while exploring the amazing environment of the mill itself.  To read more about the work visit my webpage. http://www.jillpricestudios.ca/#!tangled-realities/cua6

Old Work, New Cards

Today continued to be a clean up day at the studio with my two co-op students helping me to stuff pillows and trim cards.  I also stopped by Sandra Silberman's studio this morning and picked two more medium sized bowls for Gallery 111.  After having my archetypes done for me yesterday, watch for some new courses and workshops at Jill Price Studios surrounding image development, creativity, materiality and art speak.

Pillow Talk at the Studio.

As part of my studio clean up I have made it a goal to use up all old materials hanging around while integrating a little bit of iconography from new work.  Combining block prints from my fabricated landscapes, each one is unique and perfect for adorning a room decorated in cottage chic, or to offer comfort on those wooden or wicker chairs on the front porch.  Stop by the studio during Barrie's Studio Tour to pick out your favourite.

20th Anniversary London Studio Tour Show and Exhibition

Over the years, 132 of London's finest artists have participated in the tour, some only once, others multiple times. This years tour is proudly preceded by a 20th Anniversary Exhibition at The Art Exchange March 5 to 23 to which all past and current tour artists were invited to submit one piece each. With 60 confirmed participants, it promises to be an exciting look back and tantalizing fast forward for tour alumni and patrons.  Beth Stewart has kindly selected one of my works from The Art Exchange inventory to be part of the show, so head on out to the opening to get a glimpse at the amazing talent that has been part of the tour over the last 20 years.

Tangle Reality almost ready for Detangling

Well it has been a long couple of weeks trying to work through the beginnings of a new body of work.  I am loving the stitching into photos I took last summer and can't wait to get back to Ocean City in June to take some more shots of beach goers and tourists.  I think this year I will ride the big ferris wheel on the pier to get some aerial shots of people at the fair and may even take some photos from the parking lot side of the condo.
So are these works commercial?  Doubt it!  Is there room for them to be. Absolutely.  I am already thinking of smaller pieces on raw canvas done with a staining technique that will be much more intimate than spansive and focus on a particular diposition  rather than a spansive beach of individuals.  Do I want to go bigger?  Absolutely! Working soft has been fun and will allow for me to get as large as I want with these babies.  Hubby Geoff was awesome in helping me set up a perfect hanging system for the work.  it is my hope that Magdolene and I can flog this show at other galleries, including public ones.  Am I done with landscapes?  No, although figures are present, these still remain landscapes in many ways.  You must come see the show for anymore questions you may have about the work!

Barrie Threatens to cut $50,000.00 to Culture Grants

Hey Barrie,

I am not sure how many of you are aware of this already but last night during budget deliberations an amendment was made by Councilor Doug Shipley to cut $50,000.00 from the Cultural Grants program in the 2013 City budget. The original motion was targeted directly at the $50,000 that we allocate for project grants (which serves individuals and small requests from organizations), however after discussion my understanding is that the motion was amended to state that it did not need to come directly out of the project grant account but would just be a cut of $50,000 to the overall amount allocated to cultural grants. If this is ratified next week then not only will individual artists be affected but all of the not for profit arts organizations that apply for funding will be impacted.

There will be many people from the arts community delivering deputations against this motion, but having the entire arts community show up to support the various arguments is vital.   The Council meets next Monday night and if you have any examples of how arts funding has benefited you and the community at large, please feel free to email the Barrie Arts Council or myself so we can share your experiences.  If you would like to address the Council yourself, you are welcome to call Carey DeGorter at 705-739-4220 Ext. 4560. If you can’t reach Carey, then try Dawn McAlpine at Ext. 4421. Dawn is the City Clerk and Carey is the Deputy City Clerk.

Big thanks to the founders of Sunday Crush: Jane and Jennifer Klementti

Last week two energetic young women walked into the gallery gasping at our space and the art that fills it.  One moment captured by the landscapes of Claudia McKnight, they couldn't help but be distracted every 2 minutes by another piece in the gallery.  After a two hour interview, the girls left with things they just couldn't live without.  Check out the wonderful article they have blogged on Gallery 111.  Come see us Tuesday through Saturday during the winter months to see for yourself.  Feature Interview | Gallery 111

My series PROCESSED is heading to the Art Exchange in London, Ontario

To all of my friends, family, colleagues and collectors in London, I am heading back into town to show my most recent body of work that combines my passion for collage and the human form.  Come to the opening reception on Friday, January 11th starting at 7:30.

PROCESSED by Jill Price
January 8th - 26th, 2012
The Art Exchange, 247 Wortley Road
London, Ontario

Process-ed is a series of mixed media and lightbox works mounted onto retro fabric stretched canvases, that playfully reveals our culture's excess. Much of the work is named after 1960's and 1970's television housewives layering nostalgia and industrialization. Ultimately the work asks us to ponder the value of convenience versus using our bodies to complete simple tasks.
